Members of the Rockwall ISD Communications Department Mentor SAGE Students at Stevenson Elementary

Members of the Rockwall ISD Communications Department recently visited Stevenson Elementary to mentor SAGE students on the different pieces of a marketing campaign.

Renae Murphy, chief communications officer, talked about the importance of press releases and how to ask open-ended questions in interviews, Alyssa Suniga, webmaster and multimedia coordinator, spoke about photography techniques and print media and Steven Offield, communications coordinator, discussed social media and videography.

After taking in the information, the students worked in groups to come up with the different pieces of a marketing campaign: social media, video (interviews), video (scripted promo), press release and a flyer. All the materials were to promote PTA Game Night, an upcoming event at Stevenson Elementary.

“It was incredibly inspiring to see the students so engaged in what we presented,” said Renae Murphy.  “They took the material and worked on specific tasks and presented what they created. We look forward to seeing their finished project.”

Stevenson students plan to use these skills as part of a project to learn more about the stories of students at their own school and beyond.

This project is modeled after the famous Humans of New York and is part of a grant that was funded by Rockwall ISD Education Foundation.
