For the past year, Utley Middle School 7th Grader, Sid Santiago, has been involved in the application process in the hopes of being selected to join an elite group of scholars from public, private and parochial schools across the country in the STEMMPREP Project at the University of Washington (Seattle). This process involved an application, essay, submittal of grades since 4th grade, and an interview via Skype.
In late December, Sid was informed that he was one of 30-40 7th grade students across the country that has been selected to live in the dorms at the University of Washington (Seattle) for 5 weeks this summer to focus on studying and exploring STEMM with faculty, staff, and researchers at the institution. He will be graded on his efforts during the summer program and, if he maintains an A or B both in the program and during the regular school year, he will be invited back each summer throughout high school to participate in this program. Summer locations will change to include various institutions of higher education across the country every two years.
The STEMMPREP Project is a highly competitive and selective national program which is recognized by the National Institutes of Health as the top program in the nation for the longitudinal training of minority scholars interested in a STEMM career.
We are proud of Sid, and extend our congratulations for this remarkable accomplishment. We can’t wait to see what the future will bring to this accomplished and deserving RISD student.
