by SB 282, (80th Legislature) Advanced Placement Program: Advanced
Placement courses are challenging, comprehensive, and rigorous
courses that allow students to pursue and receive college credit
while in high school. College Board® course descriptions outline the
content of courses, and each individual teacher’s course syllabus is
approved by College Board®. AP courses are typically characterized
by an in-depth study of college-level content, an accelerated pace
and higher-level assessment. Students enrolled in AP courses are
required to take the AP exam offered for that course in the spring.
Colleges and universities have the option of accepting the AP exam
results for college credit. Exams are graded on a five-point scale
with credit usually given for scores of 3 or higher. While there is
a fee for each test, financial aid is available. Rockwall’s
secondary gifted and talented students’ needs are served through
Pre-AP and Advanced Placement programs.
Dual Credit Program: The dual credit program offered in Rockwall ISD
allows qualifying students to earn high school credit and college
hours simultaneously. Dual credit enrollment in a variety of courses
is offered to students through Eastfield Community College and
Collin County Community College. Students must obtain approval by
consulting with their counselors prior to enrolling in dual credit
courses at either community college, and they must also take the
Texas Higher Education Assessment ® (THEA®). The community colleges
may charge tuition and fees for dual credit courses. Each course
taken for dual credit may count for one of the four advanced
measures in the Distinguished Achievement Program.
